Freezing in Tallahassee
How to Keep Your Pets Safe When It Gets Cold
If you live in Tallahassee, you know this kind of cold hits different. We don’t get snow. We don’t have salt trucks. And most of us, pets included, are not acclimated to freezing temperatures. As a lifelong pet parent and the owner of Tallahassee Lassie Pet Care, I want to share a few simple but important ways to protect your pets when the temperature drops.
Shorter Walks, Smarter Walks
When it’s freezing, this is not the time for long, leisurely walks. Even healthy dogs can get cold quickly, especially small dogs, seniors, puppies, and short-haired breeds.
Keep walks short and purposeful
Watch for shivering, lifting paws, or slowing down
Stick to sunny areas when possible
If your dog hates the cold (and many do), it’s okay to replace a walk with indoor play for a day or two
Cold snaps here are temporary—your dog’s routine will survive a modification.
Paws Matter (Even Without Snow)
Even without snow or ice on the ground, cold pavement can still be harsh on paw pads.
Wipe paws after walks to remove moisture
Check for cracking or redness
Consider a pet-safe paw balm if your dog is sensitive
Cold + damp conditions can be just as uncomfortable as icy sidewalks up north.
Bring Them Inside—Yes, Even “Outdoor” Pets
This one matters a lot.
If temperatures are dropping into the 30s or below, pets should be indoors, including cats who typically live outside or dogs who “usually do fine.”
Garages, porches, and sheds are not warm enough
Outdoor cats need a warm, dry, enclosed space with bedding
Never assume fur alone is enough protection
If you’re cold standing outside for 10 minutes, your pet is too.
Adjust Feeding & Water Checks
Cold weather increases energy use, even if your pet is less active.
Make sure water bowls aren’t freezing overnight
Check water more frequently
Don’t restrict food during cold snaps—your pet may need the calories
Dehydration happens in winter too, and it’s easy to miss.
Watch Seniors & Pets With Health Conditions Closely
Older pets and those with arthritis, heart issues, or chronic conditions often struggle the most in cold weather.
Expect stiffness or slower movement
Keep them warm indoors
Use cozy bedding away from drafts
If something feels “off,” trust your gut and check in with your vet.
Final Thought From Me to You
Cold weather in Tallahassee is rare, but that’s exactly why it catches us off guard. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping our pets safe, comfortable, and stress-free.
And if you need help adjusting your pet’s routine during a cold snap, with shorter walks, midday check-ins, or just peace of mind, you know we’ve got you covered.
You’re busy. Let us take the leash. 💜
