When Pet Care Becomes a Gig, Who Pays the Price?

In Tallahassee, where small town charm is still the norm and neighbors recognize each other at the grocery store, it's worth asking why we are trusting our dogs' care to strangers selected by nationwide app platforms. Why not choose a local service that offers more convenience, reliability, familiarity and peace of mind.
The rise of national pet care platforms like Rover and Wag! has undoubtedly changed how Americans care for their pets. And the demand is real. Nearly 66% of U.S. households own a pet, and millions rely on dog walkers or sitters to keep up with busy schedules.
These platforms operate on a gig model, matching pet owners with independent contractors—often someone you've never met before. With hundreds of thousands of available sitters, accessibility is high. But consistency? Accountability? Relationship? Those are harder to guarantee. That's where local businesses tell a different story.
In a community-based model, you're not opening your door to "whoever is available." You're building a relationship with a local business, right here in Tallahassee. The same walkers show up. The same sitters learn your dog's quirks. The same management team knows your routine, your typical schedules, and foresees your expectations. Even better, local companies can set recurring schedules, automatic billing, and you can talk to a person when you call the business. You can also text them, or reach out in their app. You aren't talking to someone across the country, or in a different country, you're communicating with a local business in Tallahassee.
There's also the matter of accountability. These apps will conduct minimal screening and utilize gig-workers, also known as Independent Contractors. Gig workers cannot be instructed when to show up, how to do their job, or be held accountable to Standard Operating Procedures.
Local companies stake their reputation on every visit. Their teams are vetted, trained, and supported, not just listed on a profile. You can directly reach out to the business as needed. Businesses who are doing it properly will have formal training for their employees, continuing education, and monitoring and supervision.
As the owner of a Tallahassee-based pet care company, I've seen firsthand how much trust pet parents place in us. It's not just about getting the job done on a report. We do provide app-based reports, but we are so much more than an app. Our client families trust us because we show up consistently, professionally, and have a local team as backup if needed.
There is also the local impact to consider. When you hire a Tallahassee-based business, your dollars stay here, supporting local jobs, families, and the economy. You're more likely to see your dog walker volunteering at a local event, supporting the shelter, or simply waving hello at Cascades. This connection doesn't come from an office in Silicon Valley.
In a city like Tallahassee, we still believe in knowing who's at our front door. Maybe it's time we expect the same for who's holding our dog's leash.
